Dewees Island is a barrier island located off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. In developing an architectural and environmental master plan for housing on the island, significant emphasis was placed on the preservation of the environment to successfully integrate ecological preservation with the development requirements. Key goals included the conservation and most efficient use of limited resources, enhancement of the existing wildlife habitat, and the creation of a sanctuary where people can co-exist with the environment in a matter that is mutually beneficial. Architectural guidelines enable owners to use solar energy, natural ventilation, water conservation, and landscaping with indigenous vegetation to achieve the philosophy of "no negative impact" on the natural character of the island.
